Kent State University to cut the
History Department’s doctoral funding?
As a result of the Third Frontier legislation passed by former Governor Robert Taft and the Ohio state legislature, each year for ten years 1.5% of all doctoral funding at state universities will be transferred from the humanities to the sciences, resulting in a 15% reallocation after a decade. Doctoral programs in History and other vital humanities in universities throughout the state are endangered. The state has left it up to each university to decide how to implement its reallocation. Kent State University is considering taking all cuts from the History Department’s doctoral program. (In March 2007, in fact, Provost Paul Gaston and Acting Vice President of Research Peter Tandy announced that funding and admissions to the History doctoral program at Kent State University would indeed be cut over the next several years, but they have since announced that a final decision will wait.)
